I published my first Google Sheets tutorial 10 years ago, in October 2014. Wow, time flies!

In the meantime, in today's newsletter, we're looking at a nifty way to add dates to your Google Sheets, via the @-menu.

This was introduced ~2 years ago, so it's relatively new to the Sheets world. It's super easy to use so I encourage you to check it out!

In recent years, Google have made a big deal of the "smart canvas" idea, where your different Workspace apps are more closely integrated.

In Sheets, we see this with the file smart chips that show file metadata.

The next phase of integration is with third-parties. Third-party smart chips, which pull in rich data from third-party apps, are now available in Google Docs. I imagine we'll see these available in Sheets too, in the not too distant future.

➜ Sheets Tip #313: The "@" Date Menu

A nice, easy topic for this week, but one that is nevertheless super useful!

Take a blank cell in your Sheet and type "@" followed by "date":

Type @ followed by date to bring up the date menu in a cell of Google Sheets

Typing "@date" into a cell brings up the date picker object, with today's date highlighted.

Press Enter to select today's date or use the picker to select a different date.

Other @ Date menu choices

There are a several other date menu choices available.

Try typing the following:

@today → inserts today's date
@tomorrow → inserts tomorrow's date
@yesterday → inserts yesterday's date
@mon or @monday → Brings up list of recent Monday's (works for other days of the week e.g. @tue or @tuesday)
@next → week on Monday or 2 weeks on Monday
@next tue or @next tuesday → week on Tuesday (works for other days of the week too)
@last → week last Monday, or one before that
@last wed or @last wednesday → week last Wednesday, or one before that (works for other days of the week too)
