➜ Google Sheets Tip #229: Paste Special, the shortcut I use the most

Here is your Google Sheets tip, which you can think of as your Monday morning espresso, in spreadsheet form.

I'm a big fan of keyboard shortcuts, even though there are plenty I don't use (but probably should!).

But there are a handful that I use so frequently that they're second nature to me.

And of those, there is one that stands out: Paste Special

Paste Special (Values only)

I'm sure you're familiar with the copy and paste shortcuts (Ctrl + C and Ctrl + V).

Paste Special takes that a step further by letting you perform an operation as you paste the data.

99% of the time I use it to paste data as values only, which removes any underlying formulas and the formatting.

To paste as values, use the shortcut keys:

  • Ctrl + Shift + V on PC/Chromebooks
  • Cmd + Shift + V on Macs

It's a universal shortcut that works elsewhere too.

I find it especially useful when I'm copying from one place to another. For example, I want to copy a table from a website into my Google Sheet, but without all the crazy formatting.

Other Paste Special Operations

Paste special is more powerful than just pasting values, however.

Right click in Google Sheets to bring up the menu. Hover over "Paste special" and you'll see the different operations you can perform on data you've copied to the clipboard:

The transpose option is another one I use all the time!

MROUND function in Google Sheets

Brought to you by: Hi Reader, Welcome to the Google Sheets Tips newsletter #317, your Monday morning espresso, in spreadsheet form! I hope your week is off to a fabulous start. My youngest son is sports-mad. From the moment he wakes up until he falls asleep, he's got a bat and ball in his hands or a football at his feet.
