Google Sheets Tips Issue 300!! 🎉

Published 22 days ago • 2 min read

Hi Reader,

Welcome to this anniversary edition of the Google Sheets Tips newsletter, your Monday morning espresso, in spreadsheet form.

This is the 300th edition of this weekly newsletter! 🎉

I've been sending it out for six years. The first issue — about keyboard shortcuts — was sent on 30 April 2018 to 2,357 of you. (Huge shout-out to anyone who's still with me!)

In honor of this milestone, I want to look back at the six-year journey:

  • The newsletter began life as the "Monday Tip" newsletter, only becoming the "Google Sheets Tips" newsletter with issue 33 in January 2019.
  • From the original readership of 2,357, the newsletter now goes to 53,600+ readers each week.
  • We've had seven formula challenges, which are archived here. The last formula challenge was newsletter #243 in February 2023 (so we're long overdue for another). Each challenge had between 50 and 250 entrants! 👏
  • Although formulas are the most common topic, we've covered everything from automation frameworks to chart makeovers.
  • Along the way, we've had ups...
  • ...and downs,
  • solved some of humankind's greatest unanswered questions,
  • taken some weird detours,
  • and had a lot of fun with formulas along the way!

Thank you so much for being part of this journey. And cheers to the next 6 years! 🥂

➜ Google Sheets Tip #300!

Today's tip may be a short one, but it's super handy.

Here are two quick ways to create new Google Sheets:

Type sheet.new into your browser

Create a new blank Google Sheet instantly by typing sheet.new or sheets.new into the address bar of your web browser:

It also works with Docs, Forms, Sites, Slides, and Apps Script (try script.new).

In Drive, hold Shift + S

The sheet.new method above has one drawback: it creates the new Sheet in your root Drive folder.

You have to move it if you want it in a different folder.

To create a new Sheet in a specific folder in Drive, open that folder and hold Shift + S :

There you have it: two quick ways to create new Google Sheets!

I use both on a daily basis.

Have a great week!

Cheers,
Ben

P.S. Don't use a spreadsheet they say... ;)

Hi Reader, Greetings from sunny Harpers Ferry! ☀️ The rain has stopped (until tomorrow at least!) and I'm finally feeling better so I'm optimistic for the week ahead! Welcome to this issue of the Google Sheets Tips newsletter, #303, your Monday morning espresso, in spreadsheet form! Wow, that's a lot of exclamation points in the first few sentences! Oops, that was another. It's the optimism I feel today ;) Today I want to share a data visualization technique for showing change between two...

Hi Reader, Welcome to the Google Sheets Tips newsletter #302, your Monday morning espresso, in spreadsheet form! I'm sick at the moment, battling a nasty sinus infection. I'm not a good patient because I'm too impatient. There are so many things to do! But I'm wiser now than a decade ago and realize that rest comes first. At least I wrote this week's newsletter before getting sick. And I think it's an interesting newsletter. But it's one that might divide opinion. Purists will dislike it...

Hi Reader, Welcome to the Google Sheets Tips newsletter #301, your Monday morning espresso, in spreadsheet form. Earlier this year I sat down to record a new course but progress stalled before I got far. I've been creating courses for 7 years and realized that I need to freshen things up. One change I want to make is to inject more meaning into my work. I'm deeply interested in our natural world and protecting it for future generations. I want to use the skills I have and apply them towards...
